2027 Ford Explorer: Trims, Prices and What's New

The 2027 Ford Explorer is a three-row SUV in 5 trims: Active, ST-Line, Tremor, Platinum and ST. Every trim but the ST comes standard with a 300 hp 2.3L EcoBoost® four-cylinder, while the ST gets a standard 3.0L EcoBoost V6 rated up to 400 hp. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates the Explorer 5 stars overall in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and 4WD form.

The Explorer fits families who need a third row, drivers who tow or head down gravel roads, and buyers who want V6 performance. Every trim keeps the third row, the same maximum towing rating and the Class III Trailer Tow Package, so the choice comes down to engine and drive, then how much comfort or off-road hardware you want.

Which 2027 Explorer Trim Should You Choose?

Each 2027 Explorer trim leans toward one priority: price, tech, rough roads, comfort or performance.

2027 Ford Explorer Active

Explorer Active

The 2027 Explorer Active is the trim to choose when price comes first. It launched at the lowest price in the lineup and still keeps the third row and the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder.

2027 Ford Explorer Tremor

Explorer Tremor

The 2027 Explorer Tremor is the pick when your drives include gravel, trails or rough roads, and it's the only trim with Intelligent 4WD standard. It comes with second-row captain's chairs only, so if you need a bench, look at another trim.

  • Off-road hardware: a Torsen limited-slip rear axle for traction, off-road-tuned suspension with increased ride height, and all-terrain tires on 18-inch Ebony wheels with Electric Spice accents
  • Comfort: heated and ventilated front seats, a heated second row, a heated flat-bottom steering wheel and a 110V/150W outlet

  • Also available: the 980-watt B&O 14-speaker system, BlueCruise and a PowerFold third row
2027 Ford Explorer Platinum

2027 Explorer Engines and Drivetrain

2027 Explorer Engines and Drivetrain

The 2027 Explorer has 2 available EcoBoost engines, a 10-speed automatic on every trim and a choice of rear-wheel drive or Intelligent 4WD.

2027 Explorer engines, transmission and drivetrain availability
Powertrain Output or type Where you get it
2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder (turbocharged) 300 hp, 310 lb-ft Standard on Active, ST-Line, Tremor and Platinum
3.0L EcoBoost V6 (twin-turbocharged) Up to 400 hp, 415 lb-ft Standard on ST; available on Tremor and Platinum
Transmission 10-speed automatic Every trim; the ST adds SelectShift with paddle shifters
Rear-wheel drive Standard Active, ST-Line, Platinum and ST
Intelligent 4WD Standard or available Standard on Tremor; available on Active, ST-Line, Platinum and ST

The 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder also has Auto Start-Stop. With the 3.0L V6, the Tremor started at $56,675 MSRP at launch. The Platinum with the V6, which comes through the 3.0L Ultimate Package, started at $56,535 MSRP at launch. The destination charge is extra on both.

2027 Explorer Fuel Economy

2027 Explorer Fuel Economy

The EPA rates the 2027 Explorer by engine, drive and transmission under its own listing names, and it lists the Tremor separately. In those listings, "AWD" means the Explorer's Intelligent 4WD versions, and the 2 transmission labels used for the 3.0L, "Automatic 10-spd" and "Automatic (S10)", don't name a trim. Every listing shows regular fuel, while Ford's horsepower and torque ratings were achieved using premium fuel.

2027 Explorer EPA fuel economy by engine, drive and transmission
EPA listing Engine Transmission (EPA) City mpg Highway mpg Combined mpg
Explorer RWD 2.3L four-cylinder Automatic 10-spd 20 28 23
Explorer RWD 3.0L V6 Automatic 10-spd 18 26 21
Explorer RWD 3.0L V6 Automatic (S10) 17 25 20
Explorer AWD 2.3L four-cylinder Automatic 10-spd 20 27 23
Explorer AWD 3.0L V6 Automatic 10-spd 17 24 20
Explorer AWD 3.0L V6 Automatic (S10) 17 24 20
Explorer Tremor AWD 2.3L four-cylinder Automatic 10-spd 18 22 20
Explorer Tremor AWD 3.0L V6 Automatic 10-spd 17 22 19

The four-cylinder beats the V6 on combined mileage under each EPA listing name: Explorer RWD, Explorer AWD and Explorer Tremor AWD. The four-cylinder Explorer RWD and Explorer AWD listings share the lineup's best combined rating, with the RWD listing rated higher on the highway. The 2 Tremor listings carry the lowest highway ratings in the lineup.

Towing and Off-Road Capability

Towing and Off-Road Capability

Every 2027 Explorer trim, from the Active to the ST, is rated to tow up to 5,000 lb when properly configured, and all 5 come with the Class III Trailer Tow Package and Trailer Sway Control. That means the trim you pick for comfort or power doesn't change the towing rating.

Every trim also has the Terrain Management System with 6 selectable drive modes. The Tremor adds trail hardware on top of that:

  • Hill Descent Control and a selectable Off-Road mode
  • Unique front tow hooks, plus front and rear deflector plates
  • A grille with off-road auxiliary lights and auxiliary high beams

Ground clearance runs lowest on the Active and ST-Line and highest on the Tremor, which also has the steepest trail angles.

2027 Explorer ground clearance and approach, departure and breakover angles
Trim Minimum running ground clearance Approach angle Departure angle Breakover angle
Active, ST-Line 7.6 in - - -
ST 7.8 in 19.7° 20.8° 16.8°
Platinum 8.3 in 20.7° 22.5° 17.8°
Tremor 8.7 in 24.1° 23.7° 18.7°

More clearance lets the Tremor roll over deeper ruts, and its steeper approach, departure and breakover angles let it get onto, off and over sharper banks and crests before a bumper or the underbody touches.

Seating, Cargo and Dimensions

Seating, Cargo and Dimensions

Every 2027 Explorer has a third row. Second-row captain's chairs are standard on every trim for 6 seats, and all but the Tremor can swap them for a second-row bench that seats 7. The third row power-folds as standard on the Platinum and ST and is available that way on the Tremor.

Cargo space and passenger volume change slightly by trim.

2027 Explorer cargo space and passenger volume
Space Volume
Cargo behind the third row, every trim 16.3 cu ft
Cargo behind the second row 46 cu ft
Cargo behind the first row, Active and ST-Line 85.8 cu ft

Passenger volume, Active and ST-Line 150.3 cu ft
Passenger volume, ST and Tremor 149.5 cu ft
Passenger volume, Platinum 143.8 cu ft

Shoulder and hip room are the same on every trim, while leg room in the first and second rows differs slightly by trim.

2027 Explorer interior dimensions by row and trim

Second 40.5 37.5 37.0 61.9 59.1
Third 38.9 31.8 31.8 54.6 40.9

On a Platinum with the available moonroof, head room is 38.9 inches in the first row and 38.2 inches in the second.

Length, wheelbase and width are the same on every 2027 Explorer, while height changes by trim.

2027 Explorer exterior dimensions, fuel tank and curb weight

Wheelbase 119.1 in
Width without mirrors 78.9 in
Width with mirrors 89.3 in

Fuel tank 17.9 gal (2.3L four-cylinder); 20.2 gal (3.0L V6)
Base curb weight, 2.3L four-cylinder RWD 4,248 lb

When you measure your garage, check it against the mirrors-folded width and the height of the trim you want.

The 2027 Explorer Around the Indianapolis Metro

The 2027 Explorer Around the Indianapolis Metro

You'll find us on Scatterfield Road in Anderson. We're the only Ford dealership in Madison County, which is part of the Indianapolis metro. That means Madison County drivers don't need to leave the county to buy or service a Ford.

For families around the metro, one Explorer can cover school drop-offs, the I-69 commute between Anderson and Indianapolis, and a weekend trip. When an Indiana winter sets in or a drive turns onto a gravel county road, Intelligent 4WD is standard on the Tremor and available on the other 4 trims. The Tremor also adds more ground clearance and all-terrain tires.
